From Struggle to Sovereignty: Celebrating India's Republic Day

Every year on January 26th, Republic Day is observed to commemorate the day when our constitution was ratified in 1950. After this day, our nation attained true democracy and independence. Great heroes like Mahatma Gandhi and the many other freedom fighters who fought and gave their lives for our country's independence helped bring about the Constitution, which is the fundamental law of the land.

As a result, it was made a national holiday, and ever since, India has recognised and honoured it as Republic Day. Although it might seem like a subject best left to inquisitive preschoolers, the reason why the date for the Republic Day celebration was deliberately picked is frequently questioned. It should be emphasised that January 26 was a pivotal day in India's fight for autonomy or swaraj. On December 29, 1929, the Congress Session in Lahore adopted a resolution stating that Purna Swaraj, or total and full autonomy, was India's aim. Additionally, it was determined that Purna Swaraj Day shall be celebrated on January 26th all across India. The first official Independence Day was observed on January 26, 1930. It was observed all the way up to 1947. August 15 has been observed as our Independence Day ever since we gained independence.

People of all races, religions, colours, and origins come together on this day to commemorate the event with tremendous zeal and excitement. The Indian Military participates in the event and displays the grandeur that is associated with it in a large parade that is held in Delhi, the nation's capital. The parade, which begins after the president hoists the national flag and citizens honour heroes who gave their lives while defending the nation, puts on display the pride and vibrant variety of the nation.

The Prime Minister of India pays tribute to the martyrs by decorating Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate with a ringlet. The national song is sung, 21-gun salute fires and the flag is raised as part of the ritual. The Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra are awarded to the valiant troops. Awards are given to kids and individuals who have displayed bravery in challenging situations. The day is honoured with tremendous fanfare around the nation, particularly at educational institutions. Events are held at schools, colleges, and polytechnics to commemorate the day and raise student awareness. Students can engage in speeches, extempore, tests, and essay writing competitions. Though Republic Day and Independence Day are very distinct from one another, most people frequently mix the two together. Since they both concern the nation and the ideals of sovereignty, independence, and self-government.
